Few household appliances get more daily use than the clothes dryer — and few cause more frustration when they stop working. A dryer not heating, takes multiple cycles to dry a single load, or shuts off mid-cycle isn’t just inconvenient. It costs you time, drives up your electric or gas bill, and can become a fire hazard if the underlying issue goes unaddressed.
At ABS Home Services, we provide dryer repair in St. Louis for homeowners throughout St. Louis, St. Louis County, South County, and Jefferson County every week. Whether your dryer is electric or gas, a front-loader or top-loader laundry set, and regardless of the brand, our technicians can diagnose and fix the problem fast. Here’s what’s likely going wrong — and when it’s time to make the call.
The Most Common Reason Your Dryer Isn’t Heating
One of most common cause of a dryer not heating is a blown thermal fuse. This small, inexpensive component is a one-time safety device that cuts power to the heating element if the dryer overheats. Once it blows, it must be replaced — it does not reset on its own.
The critical thing to understand is this: a blown thermal fuse is almost always a symptom, not the root cause. In the vast majority of cases, the fuse blew because the dryer was overheating — and the most common reason for overheating is a clogged or restricted exhaust vent.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, clothes dryers cause approximately 2,900 house fires per year in the United States, with failure to clean the dryer vent accounting for 34% of those fires. Lint accumulates not just in the lint trap but throughout the exhaust duct — especially in longer duct runs, those with multiple elbows, or flexible vinyl ducts that are prone to crushing and blockage.
If your dryer is not heating and you haven’t had the exhaust vent professionally cleaned in over a year, that’s the first thing to address — before the fuse is even replaced. Our appliance repair team in St. Louis addresses the full system, not just the part that failed.

Other Reasons Your Dryer is Not Heating
If the vent is clear and the thermal fuse is intact, the heating problem likely stems from one of these components:
Heating element failure (electric dryers). The heating element is a coil of resistance wire that generates heat when electricity passes through it. Over time — typically after 8–12 years of use — the coil can break, cutting off heat entirely. A broken heating element is one of the most common causes of a dryer not heating and is usually straightforward to replace.
Gas valve solenoid failure (gas dryers). Gas dryers use a set of solenoid coils to open the gas valve and allow fuel to flow to the burner. When one or more solenoids fail, the igniter may glow but the gas won’t flow — meaning the burner never lights. You might notice the dryer heats briefly and then goes cold, or doesn’t heat at all.
Igniter failure (gas dryers). The igniter glows hot enough to light the gas at the burner. Igniters crack and fail over time. A failed igniter means no flame, no heat.
High-limit thermostat. This component acts as a secondary safety cutoff. When it fails, it can prevent the heating circuit from completing — even when nothing is actually overheating.
Any of these parts is repairable by a qualified technician, often in a single visit. The key is accurate diagnosis — replacing the wrong part wastes money and leaves the real problem in place.

Why Your Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry — Even When It Does Heat
A dryer that heats but takes two, three, or even four cycles to fully dry a normal load is a red flag that deserves attention. The culprit is almost always restricted airflow — again pointing back to the exhaust vent system.
When humid air can’t escape the drum efficiently, the moisture-laden air recirculates, extending drying time dramatically. Homeowners often compensate by running extra cycles — which increases energy use, accelerates wear on the dryer’s components, and continues to push the thermal fuse toward failure.
Other causes of long dry times include:
- Worn drum seals. The felt seals around the drum opening prevent unheated room air from leaking into the drum. Worn seals allow cool air infiltration, lowering the effective drying temperature.
- Faulty moisture sensor bars. Most modern dryers use moisture sensor bars inside the drum to detect when clothes are dry. If these bars become coated with dryer sheet residue, they can misread the moisture level and either shut the dryer off too early or run it far too long. Wiping the bars with rubbing alcohol is a simple fix homeowners can try first.
- Drive motor issues. A motor that’s starting to fail may run the drum at reduced speed, lowering tumbling efficiency and extending dry time.
The average electric dryer costs roughly $0.36–$0.50 per load to run based on national average electricity rates. A dryer running two extra cycles per load every day adds up to $260 or more in unnecessary energy costs over a year. A repair that fixes the root problem pays for itself quickly.

Repair vs. Replace: How to Decide
When dealing with a dryer not heating, the general appliance industry guideline — the "70% rule" — applies to dryers just as it does to other appliances: if the repair cost exceeds 70% of the replacement cost of a comparable new unit, replacement deserves serious consideration.
Lean toward repair when:
- The dryer is under 15 years old
- The repair involves a thermal fuse, heating element, igniter, or solenoid (all relatively affordable parts)
- The drum, motor, and control board are in good shape
Lean toward replacement when:
- The dryer is over 20 years old and has had multiple repairs
- The drum bearing or motor has failed on an older unit (labor-intensive repairs)
- You’re upgrading to a more energy-efficient model anyway
Our technicians provide honest assessments. If a repair isn’t worth it on your unit, we’ll tell you — and we can assist with appliance installation when you’re ready for a new dryer.
